New Geo-Competition for ASCE Regional Student Conferences: Geo-Challenge

ASCE is proud to announce a new event for student chapter competition. Geo-Challenge is a geotechnical competition which involves the construction of a paper-reinforced earth retaining structure. The objective is to design and build a miniature reinforced-soil (also called a Mechanically Stabilized Earth, or MSE) retaining wall using sand, inside a plywood form with paper affixed to a posterboard wall-facing as reinforcement. The intent of the challenge is to foster teamwork and sportsmanship in geotechnical engineering design. The competition rewards innovative engineering in minimizing the amount of construction materials used, while maintaining practicality in assembly and construction times. The event was demonstrated last year and is ready for competition this year. We solicit advisors and students to advocate adoption of the event in every region, and anticipate that it will soon be ready for competition at the national level at the annual Geo-Institute Congresses.
