1. Title: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
   
2. Objective: Obtain an overview of what will be discussed during this semester. Understand various GIS spatial types, that is points, lines, polygons, layers, and raster images. Lastly, how a database is fundamental to a GIS.
   
3. Topics: off the shelf software packages that implement GIS concepts ESRI ARC/INFO version 7.2.1 or 8.0.1, ER Mapper 6.1, ESRI ArcView 3.2, and Autodesk Map 2000 (?).

6. ArcView Methodology to create a plot
   
   • Start ArcView with a new view and browse to the shapefile
     
   • Turn on the theme by selecting the check box in the view legend
     
   • Theme -> Edit Legend: 1) Legend Type - Graduated Color, 2) Classification Field: Area, 3) Normalize by: None, 4) select Classify... button, Round values at: d, and 5) select Apply
     
   • View -> Properties: Map Units-Feet, Distance Units-Feet
     
   • File -> Print Setup: Letter & Landscape
     
   • set the scale, 1:2400 in the upper right corner of the application
     
   • View -> Layout... Landscape Layout1
     
   • highlight the layout window: 1) double click scalebar, set units feet, interval 10, intervals 5, and left 10. 2) double click title. 3) double click north arrow.
     
   • Layout -> Add Neatline: Click on a border style
   • Add a company logo by selecting the "Picture Frame" icon. Might be hidden under the "View Frame" icon.

7. Homework: create a 8.5x11 landscape thematic plot using ArcView that has all of the above map elements. Include neatline page border, Assessor book, map title, and index map. Use the Parcel data in one view and Township-Range-Section for the index map.

   • To view the attributes associated with the GIS type/theme, use Theme->Table. Can select a record in the table (will be selected in the map display) or select a GIS type/theme (e.g. point) in the map display (using the Identify Tool) and the database record will be highlighted.
     
   • To query the database/table, use Table->Query. Double click the fields and values to populate the query, then hit the New Set button.
     
   • To import a ArcInfo .e00 file, use Start->Programs->ESRI-> ArcView GIS 3.2->Import71

1. Title:Add tables & view raster images and points with ArcView
2. Objective: Understand basics of database queries, joins, relates, and exports. How to view different GIS types/themes, those being points and raster images.

4. Commands: Procedure to join two tables. Open both tables in ArcView. Select relate field of the table non-theme table (source table). Then in the theme's attribute table select the relate field (destination table or active table). Then select Table->Join.
5. Topics:
   • Image conversion: for simple TIFF to BMP conversions, can use Image Alchemy, but to reproject the image, say from UTM Zone 11 to SPCS83 Nevada East Zone, use ArcView GIS plug-in
   • Clark County Elections Department: classifying data spatially is a key element for a GIS. Using ArcView, create a pie chart for each precinct that shows the amount of voters that are either Democrats, Republicans, non-partisans, or Libertarians.
   • Database Joins: basic relational database design is to create several smaller databases that can be related/joined together. This is opposite of large flat files (e.g. Excel Spreadsheets). Both have there advantages and disadvantages.
   • one-to-one (e.g. name and social security #), many-to-one (e.g. several/many students in one class)
   • Reports: there are 3 methods to print a table within ArcView. 1) method is just do a file print. Problem is the entire database is printed, no control on the formating. 2) add the table to the layout. This will only print a limited amount of records. 3) use Seagate Crystal Reports which is a 3rd party application that comes with ArcView. Will hopefully cover this in latter class.

   • Create ArcView plot showing pie chart of voter type by precinct. Include title, scale bar, key legend, north arrow, and logo.
   • Create ArcView plot with aerial photo in the background, overlay parcel lines on top of image. Include title, scale bar, north arrow, and logo.
   • Join the parcel shapefile with the aoextract table. Make a printout showing parcel number and address.

6. In typical design projects, surveyors use their own local/surface coordinate system to ensure when engineers scale the map they obtain true ground distances. In GIS land, the data is typical based on know projection (e.g. UTM). Majority of GIS data in Clark County NV is based on Stateplane Coordinates, using the North American Datum 1983 (NAD83), with units feet and a zone. What zone is Clark County NV (East, Central, or West)? (2 pts.)
   
7. Given an ArcView Layout that has a paper size of 11x17 inches and a view frame (also know as a viewport) of 8x8 inches, you need to plot a section (1 square mile) of land. What scale is need to fit the section of land in the view frame? Express answer in typical scale format, for example 1:2400. (2 pts.)

   • Import ArcInfo interchange files (.e00) into ArcView. Use Start->Programs->ESRI->ArcView GIS 3.2->Import71 note: must provide a workspace/directory name to create.
     
   • View ArcInfo annotation in ArcView, note: ArcInfo coverages contain multiple data types, similar to AutoCAD DWGs, so select the folder to add individual types/themes.
     
   • For ArcInfo annotation/text themes, change the textstyle/font and color by double clicking the theme in the Table of Contents/Legend of the view. Note can't change the textsize, bug in ArcView-this option should be grayed/dimmed. Only way is to use ArcInfo-ArcEdit $size for map units or $size=0 for page units.
     
   • To generate text labels from the database, use Theme->Auto-label... note: uses the current textstyle/font set in the Window->Show Symbol Window... (ABC button). Limitations with Auto-label are very difficult to stack text, even when manually moving, changes aren't reflected in the Layout for plotting.
     
   • Auto-label joined tables.
     
   • Select features in the View using the "Select Feature" button. Record is highlighted in the attribute table.
     
   • Use the "Identify" button to query a single object.
     
   • Select record in the attribute table, highlight in the view also. Note, use the View command "Zoom to Selected" or the table command "Promote" to assist in finding data.
     
   • ArcView Projects (.apr) don't store/embed any data (e.g. tables- .dbf, spatial data files such as .shp or ArcInfo coverages, etc.) but just contain a link. This is similar to AutoCAD Map Projects or AutoCAD .dwg with raster images. The project window shows all the views, tables, charts, layouts, and scripts that can be used in an ArcView application.
     
   • Rumor: ArcView 4.0 will support VBA which is due this year.
     
   • File -> ArcView Projection Utility... (if not there, need to load the extension using File -> Extensions: then check Projection Utility Wizard). Typical projections are Lat/Long decimal degress, NAD83-Nevada East Zone Feet Stateplane coordinates, and UTM Zone 11 Meters.
